Ten years ago, May 2016 may not have been packed with blockbuster album releases, but it still gave Nigerian music two important moments — one defined by massive commercial success and the other by bold artistic expression.

Phyno’s “Fada Fada” Takes Over

On May 5, 2016, Phyno released “Fada Fada (Ghetto Gospel)” featuring Olamide. Produced by Masterkraft, the song quickly became one of the biggest Nigerian records of the year.

Its infectious energy, street appeal, and strong replay value made it a dominant force on radio, in clubs, at parties, and across the streets. “Fada Fada” spent ten consecutive weeks at No. 1 on PlayData’s Radio Top Ten chart and was later voted Nigeria’s Hottest Track of 2016 by MTV Base’s industry experts Roundtable.

At The Headies 2016, it won Song of the Year, confirming its place as one of the defining songs of that era. It also won Collaboration of the Year at the 2016 tooXclusive Awards. The official music video, released on May 13, 2016, helped push the record even further.

Brymo Drops Klĭtôrĭs

A few days later, on May 9, 2016, Brymo released his fifth studio album, Klĭtôrĭs. The 11-track independent project blended Yoruba influences, Afrobeat, pop, and soul, showing Brymo’s commitment to originality and experimentation.

The album’s title and sensual concept generated conversation online, but beyond the controversy, Klĭtôrĭs was praised for its lyrical depth, sonic richness, and artistic ambition. It appeared on several year-end lists of the best Nigerian albums of 2016 and earned a nomination for Best R&B/Pop Album at The Headies 2016 (which was won by Kiss Daniel’s New Era).

What the Month Represented

Together, these two releases showed the two strong sides of Nigerian music in 2016:

  • Fada Fada” represented street energy, mass appeal, and chart dominance
  • Klĭtôrĭs” represented creative risk, artistic identity, and critical acclaim

Even though the month was not overloaded with major projects from every commercial heavyweight, it still reflected how singles were driving the culture, while independent albums continued to push the creative boundaries of Nigerian music.

Ten years later, “Fada Fada” remains one of the biggest Nigerian songs of 2016, while “Klĭtôrĭs” is still respected as one of the year’s most daring and accomplished albums.
