On a first, inattentive listen, one might assume Kidd Carder (born Oluwatosin Samuel in 2002)—judging solely by the title of his viral hit “Big Bum Bum“—is just another name in the new generation singing about lustfulness and sexual hedonism. However, with more listens, Carder emerges as a promising, unique voice in this new crop of artistes. His rich baritone shines through with ease, validating the random Twitter conversations: “Kidd Carder is a dope artiste,” “Big Bum Bum is a jam,” and “Big Bum Bum is a top 10 song this year.”
On this record, the hottest new artiste, Mavo, gets disposed of having a memorable and sticky feature verse, even though it’s arguable if “Big Bum Bum” could have gotten this much buzz without a Mavo feature.
Project Analysis
The album starts off with “Intro,” an introspective opener that makes you wonder if this same “Big Bum Bum” crooner could be more of an introspective artiste than initially perceived. With its choral sample and themes about his come-up, the track echoes familiarities with the Afro-Adura sound and its signature use of female backup vocals.
On “Gobe,” he sings with the popular tonalities and cadence of an artiste we are already familiar with, Fola. Here, he pivots to romance and affection, adoring a faceless woman’s body.
“Elevate” sees him coming back to more introspective themes about the grind, the hustle, and rising above current situations. Anchored again in the Afro-Adura sound and its use of female backup vocals, the track is produced by The Beat Murderer (TBM). The popular “Beat Murderer” tag is an instantly familiar tag on a lot of Seyi Vibez’s recognizable hits and some of Balloranking’s works.
The EP then switches to a more exotic production laced with subtle Amapiano log drums for the viral, pre-released lead single, “Big Bum Bum.” Delivered with a very wavy, lamba-centric cadence, the guest feature is unfortunately discarded of any shine or memorable verse. Finally, “Eye Witness,” the closing track, brings things back to reality; here he talks about how quickly people switch up when things slow down. Still, he stays locked in on his goals.
Conclusion
Kidd Carder is a promising star with a unique voice. While he may seem familiar and easy to place at first, he is actually quite hard to categorize. On closer examination, it’s difficult to describe what he truly represents; he still feels like an enigma with a lot of potential yet to be revealed. Time will tell as he releases newer material—possibly an album.
