On the 25th of July 2018, M.I Abaga announced to the world that he was closing up shop for Nigerian HipHop, after the release of three albums, all executive produced by him

These albums include a collaborative effort by two hip-hop heavyweights Loose Kaynon and A-Q’s “Crown”, M.I’s “Yung Denzel” and Blaqbonez’s “Bad Boy Blaq”.  Ever since then, hip-hop fans all over the country have been eagerly anticipating #LAMBAugust according to M, and have marked the dates on their calendars.
We caught up with A-Q to talk about one of the upcoming albums, “Crown”, by himself and Loose Kaynon, which is now available for pre-order and will be released on the 17th of August, 2018.

NS:
Walk us through the creative process. You previously mentioned Loose told you he didn’t like you from the get go. How did you guys make it work?

A-Q:
I respected his honesty,[and] I understood where he was coming from, and in time he saw I was not what people said I was. We became friends, I respect his music orientation and let him choose the music, although we had to argue a lot of times, we always reached a meeting point. We ran everything through M.I before making the music and then M put the finishing to the songs. For once, I let other people handle the creative direction of my music.

NS:
That must have been difficult for you because I know you’re very hands on when it comes to your art. Do you think that will make this project totally different from your previous projects?

A-Q:
It was difficult, but I am already a very versatile rapper.I rapped really well on everything that was thrown my way. However, I could not really express myself on the tracks, because M wanted more music in the project, so you can say this is the most musical I have ever been on an album. The side effect of that is I did not get to be as detailed in my content like I would have liked to. There was not enough space for that.

NS:
Rappers seldom make joint albums in the Nigerian hip-hop sphere, even worldwide, and when they eventually do, they are very picky about who they make it with. So why Loose? Was it a label decision or was it more of a right place, right time kinda situation.

A-Q:
Shortly after “Blessed Forever”, I knew I wanted to do something different. I wanted to do a collaborative project and Loose Kaynon suggested I do it with him. I thought it was a Good idea because working with him was going to be easy, we both own 100 Crowns under Chocolate City and we both have a lot in common in terms of characteristics. We both share similar backgrounds in the industry and we both have the same goal of helping hip-hop reach it’s pinnacle in Nigeria.

NS:
Crown is a very provocative title. What inspired that name for the album?

A-Q:
The whole theme of the Album is Royalty, hence the title.

NS:
What are your favorites on the album? and please don’t say all.

A-Q:
Gang Gang, Hustler Prayers, Best Rapper Alive.

NS:
Working with new artists can sometimes be challenging, and you have new names on the track-list. How was this experience and what should we expect from them?

A-Q:
There is only one new artist on the album, Torna. He’s very talented and did not need a lot of directing to execute his role on the album. You guys should watch out for him.

NS:
One thing you haven’t been scared of is saying it as it is on records. Are you going for more of the same on this project or you are taking a new approach on this project?

A-Q:
I guess we will find out when the album drops on the 17th of August.

NS:
Haha…okay finally, tell us 5 things we should expect from Crown on the 17th.

A-Q:
I can only tell you one thing: every time I drop an album, it has been a moment in hip-hop, [and] this will not be any different. I present to you the best rap album of 2018: CROWN 👑

NS:
Thanks A-Q…nice talking with you and we are definitely looking forward to the 17th!

A-Q:
BLESS KING!

Watch out for “Crown” when it comes out! I know we will be watching.
