The Best Nigerian Hip-Hop Albums of 2025
Curated By:- Fazillion
Words By:- Philemon Jacob
In October 2025, the global hip-hop landscape was thrown into a frenzy when news broke that, for the first time in almost 40 years, there were no rap songs in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. The report unsurprisingly reignited the “rap is dead” conversation around the world, with many critiquing the genre’s inability to mint new superstars and deliver mainstream commercial hits. Meanwhile, in Nigeria, the opposite seems to be unfolding.
While the incredible success of Afrobeats relegated hip-hop to the sidelines for the better part of the last two decades, Nigerian rap is experiencing a resurgence and gaining momentum. This is evident in the widespread acceptance of a new generation rap star like Zaylevelten (whose genre-contorting, youth-driven, hedonistic strain of rap music captured the imagination of the audience) and the popularity of A-Q’s God’s Engineering 3, reinforcing his status as a leader in today’s rap scene. Nigerian hip-hop in 2025 delivered a healthy mix of chart-topping mainstream hits and lyrically compelling albums while introducing us to rap stars poised to usher in a new golden generation of Nigerian hip-hop.
But for this piece, we want to highlight the albums that excited us the most. The albums that sent a rush through our bodies and had us yapping for hours on end. Below is a list of our favourite rap albums of the year.
-
Zlatan – Symbol Of Hope

Available On:- Audiomack, Youtube, Apple Music, Spotify &
Memorable Tracks:- Demons, Paypal, Alpha and Omega, Hip-hop Messiah, Genesis.

On his fourth LP, Zlatan Ibile fully embraces his status as a symbol of hope for young dreamers gunning for success. The Ikorodu-bred hitmaker has risen above the odds and overcame unbelievable adversity to become the successful musician, entrepreneur, and father we all adore today. He spends a significant chunk of the album basking in the euphoria of his success (Pay Day, Oyoyo, Paypal) and flaunts his hitmaking credentials (Odeshi, Genesis, Happy Day, Bebe) much to the dissatisfaction of hip-hop purists who often dismiss him due to the fact that his music ignores the conversational rules of hip-hop. Across 16 tracks, Zlatan delivers an album that holds the listeners’ attention from start to finish despite its lengthy run time. His bubbling energy and personality shine throughout the project, while the album’s fine mix of party starters, aspirational records, and rare moments of introspection all roll into one highly enjoyable album.

Released as a forerunner to his monumental album, Industry Machine, this album was an indicator of what was to come. The machine is coming, released in February 2025, continuing Odumodublvck’s dominant run at the very top of the Nigerian hip-hop food chain. Across its 41-minute runtime, the album delivers on everything that makes OD great. His bravado-filled rap verses, hard-hitting bars, expressive deployment of Nigerian street lingo, and remarkable gift for delivering memorable hooks shine brightly across this album’s 16 tracks, raising the stakes and setting the bar high for the machine’s eventual arrival.

Paybac Iboro & The Chill – Sometimes I Dream About Death
Record Label:- Independent
Producers:- The Chill
Guest Appearances:- N/A
Available On:- Youtube music, Spplemusic & Spotify
Memorable Tracks:- Opobo’s Curse, Me and My Mental Health, Every Song Dey Like The Outro, Bobai, Young And Depressed In Lagos.

In a Nigerian hip-hop scene that is often decadence-obsessed and over the top, Paybac Iboro‘s SIDAD confronts what is real. While this writer has more love for his mixtape, Omoboy, released earlier in 2025, SIDAD is a much more compelling listen revolving around themes of mental illness and substance reliance. In a Nigerian society that is absolutely nothing to write home about, plagued by insecurity and harsh economic realities worsened by over six decades of terrible leadership, a significant chunk of Nigerian youths have turned to drugs to find solace and comfort as they fight every day to maintain their sanity in this multiversal madness. SIDAD paints a jarring picture of the darkness that abounds and the sadness that lies beneath the smiling faces. It was the Greek philosopher Aristotle who said that art imitates life. Unfortunately, much of Nigerian music often tends to draw its inspiration from aspirational fantasies rather than everyday realities, failing to mirror the experiences and struggles of real life in today’s Nigeria. Paybac Iboro offers a grim reflection of the darker truths.

In my review of this album, I wrote that “A-Q is that cool uncle whose presence is a guarantee that you’re going to learn something new or be exposed to a different perspective on different subject matters. His music is more than just beats and rhymes; he documents, reflects, and enlightens. He’s lived it; he has learned, and if you listen closely, you will learn too. “That’s really what this album is, a learning session. It’s a lyrically compelling album that provides a blueprint for young dreamers trying to make something out of life using A-Q’s lived experiences as a roadmap. There’s so much to learn from this album.

Like the title suggests, Falz presents a dining table loaded with delightful delicacies as he embraces different genres and explores a wide spectrum of Nigerian pop sounds, with hip-hop forming the anchor. His signature simplicity and relatability significantly enhance the album’s listening experience, making for a highly entertaining listen.

Memorable Tracks:- Aura 4 Aura, ACL, Nati, Louder, California Issues.
Two years after Blaqbonez’s Emeka Must Shine album painfully failed to live up to the hype, Blaqbonez found himself in an uncomfortable situation. Throughout 2024, Blaqbonez was on a terrible run of form. His singles Fire on Me, Haibo Freestyle, Emeka Dance, and 60/40 all sailed under the mainstream radar. It would take him calling on the street heavyweights like Ayo Maff and Bella Shmurda as he tapped into the streets whose patronage had propelled the remix of his song Louder to significant success. Despite the success of Louder, Blaqbonez was still in the valley. His single W for Wetego, which featured Young Jonn and Phyno, was not performing well, and Follow Her with Kizz Daniel failed so badly the record didn’t even make the album. With Odumodublvck’s place as the undisputed heavyweight champion of Nigerian hip-hop becoming increasingly undeniable, there were only two options left on the table for Blaqbonez: go crazy or go home. He chose the former. The album No Excuses saw Blaqbonez return to hip-hop territory while delivering an album that matched his commercial aspirations. The album provided a fine mix of the hip-hop core (Consistency, Just Hustling, Stacks, California Issues, ACL) that appeals to staunch Blaqbonez supporters and the pop-leaning anthems (Go Crazy, Good Time, Nati, Aura4aura) that pushed his commercial agenda. In the end, Blaqbonez delivered a balanced and brilliant album that shines on the strength of his relentless creativity. When the going got tough, Blaqbonez got going.

Memorable Tracks:- Pawon, Guide Pass, Yami, Maye, Wenski.

Not even Zaylevelten‘s day-one supporters could have predicted his surreal rise to the upper echelon of Nigerian hip-hop in 2025. Tenski, as he is fondly called by his ever-expanding fan base, has captured the imagination of the Nigerian music landscape thanks to his breakout album, Then It Got Crazy, which offers 33 minutes of nonstop trap variants coloured by contemporary Nigerian street lingo while he explores topics that revolve around (but are not limited to) extravagant lifestyles, getting laid, and taking party drugs, all delivered with a confident, unstoppable swagger. A deluxe version And Then It Got Crazier, which includes bonus tracks like Wuse Tu was released shortly after, thus emphasizing the success of this groundbreaking and mostly self produced project.

One of the reasons why 2025 was a good year for Hip-hop was because we saw many of the genre’s legends returning to prove that thoughtful lyricism and depth must have a place in contemporary rap. From legends like Malice, Slick Rick, Mobb Deep, De La Soul among others, the legends of Hip-hop are destroying the notion that Hip-hop is a young man’s game. Enter Mode nine, the veteran lyricist made a big splash on the biggest Hip-hop album of the year featuring on Odumodublvck’s smash hit single, If You Like Gym. Earlier in the year, he went aura for aura with Latino Perrico on Bank of Faith 2 off the former’s Catholic Boys album. On his latest album Thereafter, he joins forces with producer Black Intelligence and soulful vocalist Maka, the result is a project that feels less like a typical rap album and more like a carefully constructed musical statement. This album combines the razor-sharp lyricism that Mode Nine is famous for with lush production that moves between Boom-bap, jazz-soul, and experimental Hip-hop. It is an album that honors the traditional tenets of Hip-hop.

The album shines on the strength of the consistent sonic approach to the production despite exploring different subgenres; even when the genres change, the sound is identifiable. Odumodublvck spent a significant chunk of 2024 and 2025 preparing the Nigerian music landscape for the inevitable release of his second major-label album. He even went as far as releasing a full-length album in a bid to drum home the message that ‘The Machine is Coming‘. On the 5th of October, 2025, the machine finally made its grand appearance. The 23-track album was a thunderous claim to the crown of Nigerian hip-hop. To showcase his dominance in the industry, Odumodublvck assembles a star-studded lineup of 23 collaborators from across the Atlantic and beyond. The album spans every major genre, from Afrobeat and drill to dancehall and highlife, as OD continually pushes the boundaries of sound.
