Critical Breakdown
Though he has been around for about 3 years now, Jumar came to the consciousness of the average Nigerian Music fan with his placement on two singles off the critically acclaimed Jagz Nation Volume 2:- Royal Niger Company Album which was released by Jesse Jagz last year.He appeared on The Search [ Radio ] and The Window, two songs where he displayed his artistry and convinced a lot of music fans that he was a bonafide act who could hold his own alongside one of the best acts of the day. After Jesse delivered his project, Jumar started working on his, and delivered a 7-track project titled The Afrocan EP In July.
True Colours is the first track on the project, this one is a mid-tempo groove which was inspired by Legendary artiste Phil Collins song of the same name. Jumar tapped into Phil’s genius to create a befitting opening track which is likely to raise eyebrows and strike a chord with a lot of music curators. Satisfy You has him singing in falsetto crafting a pop song which will resonate well with the ladies while he switches to a more laid back sombre mood on Truth, a very solid track which was performed over the strumming of salient guitar strings and had him ( pretty much ) mourning the loss of true love, I really felt this song should have been a bit longer because of how great I feel it is.Next is a hilarious skit which I felt should have been called “Quick Class” , it samples vocals from a viral interview with South African student Mo Ncgobowande which has made its rounds online, this skits ushers in the next tune Monkey, which is an attempt to create a mainstream commercial afro-pop song, perhaps making this type of music is not his forte as the song felt forced and didn’t sound organic to me, but the Afrobeat inspired production on this song was sound enough to mask any iniquities which his vocals may have effected. Wickedest is a Ragga inspired tune which was well produced and performed, a fitting ode to the “Ajegunle Sounds” of the late 90’s-mid 2000’s which dominated the Nigerian Urban airwaves. He ends the EP the same way he started with Replay another smooth track for the ladies which was sprinkled with a little faux rap which worked just well to create a solid Radio track.
Jumar has announced his arrival to the scene with this, and it is quite an impressive project, ESPECIALLY the production which really fit every track like a glove, I have almost nothing bad to say about this project because Jumar also puts a lot of efforts into his lyrics, a practice which is not commonplace among may of todays budding pop acts. He also showed that he possesses a remarkable vocal quality which shined all through this project, It is something alternative and calm for the grown and sexy, a breath of fresh air and a befitting way for him to open his account on the Nigerian music scene.
I recommend this project to any music nerd, crate digger, industry head or any lover of good music, quit complaining that there are no talented acts in Nigeria, check Jumar out.
