Before Reinhard discovered how amazing and exciting music production is, he wanted to be a dancer. Although we are not sure how prolific his dance moves are, Reinhard is on his way to becoming one of the best music producers in Nigeria. The talented producer is behind some of the heavy hits from Chocolate City in recent times. Growing up in Lagos, he became exposed to the sounds and experiences that has helped shaped his music and in his words, “gives it juice”. We caught up with the young hit-maker to talk about his life, career and plans for the future.
Tell us a bit about you. How did you fall in love with production?
I used to be a dancer, at the time our dance teacher had a Windows computer which he used for his record production (in his room), the living was our rehearsal
ground. When the sound system in the living room went bad, he had to move the Studio to the living room and that became the sound system for rehearsals.
A lotta times I’d come for rehearsals early and hear him work on his music, I could tell it’s him singing because we’d dance to his music sometimes. One of the days I
came early for rehearsals there was nobody around, I waited for a while, got bored and decided to explore on his computer. I had just got out of computer school (the
one after your secondary education #Nocertificate)[laughs] anyways I got on the computer, was familiar with the different software but I had never seen the fruit
like one (at the time), FL Studio. I opened it and I just fell in love with the interface then I began to mess around with the bricks that turn white when you select
them. I made my first beat after a couple hours, although I couldn’t change the BPM (tempo or speed), it was obviously wack.
It was a whole new experience for me, I was excited. Right in the middle of my excitement my dance teacher walks in, couldn’t get myself together, he’d let me use the
computer but I wasn’t sure I was allowed to use the software.
He burst into laughter hearing the beat I made, although I understand why he laughed now but at the time I was embarrassed, so I began to hang with him (scared to ask
how I could alter BPM), so began to get comfortable around him in the studio once again after the embarrassing laugh he gave me, so I asked him one day “how do you
change tempo?”. He showed me and from then on I kept improving the skill and making beats.
All of this happened in 2008. So I wanted to explain this part first before I tell a bit about myself. My names are “REINHARD OGHENETEGA MOMOH”.
originally from Edo state, born and brought up in Surulere, Lagos State. I’ve got two younger siblings, females.
What sort of music did listen to growing up in Surulere?
RnB, Soul, Hip-hop, Afro-jazz (Fela), Fuji (the neighbours and parties around the hood), Gospel music, Nigerian folk music (a little Victor Uwaifo, Ebenezer Obey). My
dad had and still keeps CDs of Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, Michael Jackson, Don Moen, Ron Kenoly, Kirk Franklin, Barry White, Jay Z, Kanye West, Destiny’s Child,
Aliyah, Jah rule, Akon, Boys 2 Men, Backstreet Boys, LL Cool J. Some of these artists songs are in collections like “Popular Demand”, Vol 1 & 2. There are so many
artists CDs and collections my dad keeps I can’t all remember right now though.
How did that influence your production coming up?
It gave diversity and juice: the songs I make don’t sound the same and they’ve got juice (sweetness).
I think the first time I heard your “Rein Rein Reinhard” Tag was on the chairman album. How did you link up with M.I and Choc city
Oh I didn’t have the tag at the time, you probably heard it on TICBN (2015) [ Read our review HERE ], Chairman album was 2014. Well Milli introduced me to M.I in January 2014, I remember
going to M.I’s house, wasn’t sure Milli was telling me the truth until we got to M’s house the first day, he told me he had been talking and hanging with M.I.
Even though M.I gave me audience, he wasn’t convinced that I was good enough for a position as a Producer (he told me this after a couple months).
I had to prove myself. M.I took me in, introduced me to everybody in the family after I started to show signs of commitment. M.I is an amazing Man. God bless him
Oh yeah. That was the TICBN album. That to me, was your big break.
Yeah, TICBN was a big break for the brand “Reinhard Tega”
Are you a 7 beats per day producer or you make beats on demand?
It works both ways, depending on the situation, I’m a business man.
Some of your best beats for me have been hiphop beats, Including your latest work on the Crown Album with A-Q, Loose Kaynon and SDC. What were you on when making that
[Laughs] I was on nothing, the idea was to create a classic hip-hop beat that’s all. The beat was created 3 years (or maybe 2 years) ago for Loose Kaynon, but he
didn’t use it until now, I guess it just wasn’t the right time for the beat to be used. The end of the beat (the drop) was created this year 2018, weeks to the album
compilation. A lot of people don’t also realise or forget that I made the beat to “Bad Belle” by M.I.
Oh Yeah, Bad Belle was and is still a very hard record. Do you think that’s the biggest
record you’ve produced till date?
It Is one of the biggest, I think so far “Kole Werk” by Koker is the biggest record I produced. That was major.
You’ve branched out into making producer singles. What inspired that?
You know how artists have their ideas, and want producers to interpret their ideas into music or better say bring their ideas to reality, most artist aren’t open to
other ideas even when they don’t know what they really want. There are situations where they ask me for a particular type of beat, I give them but they don’t use it
because they’re not open to other ways of piecing music together and you know most of them think Producers should be beat makers. They can’t even differentiate between
a Record Producer and a beat maker. You know there’s difference right? So because I am a Producer, and I (think I) understand why we create music, I decided to put
out these ideas in my head that these artists refuse because they don’t want to or can’t understand.
Are you putting out a compilation of these thoughts any time soon?
Oh yes, I put out the single of the project (Arewa Featuring Funbi) in February and in a few weeks I’ll put out the project (Reverb & Depth the EP). It’s the first project and it’s Afrobeats.
Whats it about? And who do you have on the project?
It’s about happiness, Love, celebrating women, celebrating men and friendship. We have Jesse Jagz, Victoria Kimani (Kenyan), Nosa, Funbi, Krissy, Anto Neosoul
What are your thoughts about the direction of Nigerian music and what role can producers like yourself play to make it better?
Nigerian music is good music. I think the reason we get tired of it is because we are first consumers. What I mean is we hear these Lyrics every time, our regular day
to day conversations have these lyrics and stories in them, so we get sort of tired when we hear them in songs. Regardless Nigerian music is amazing music. I’m just
going to do my part.
What do you think about how the industry and artistes handle producers?
Yes in Nigeria.
Nigerian Producers need to learn the business, know and understand their rights. Just educate yourself as a Music/Record Producer or a beat maker.
Which of the songs you’ve made has been the most difficult ever?
None, they come with different challenges but they’re never difficult.
Which artists are you really looking forward to working with inside and outside Nigeria?
Inside Nigeria, Funbi, Nonso Amadi (he is Nigerian…[laughs]), Simi, Yemi Alade, Tiwa Savage, Wizkid (would really like to work with him again). I know I’m missing
some names. Outside Nigeria, there’s too many of them.
What has been the most memorable moment for you as a producer?
When I worked with 2face.
That must have been one hell of a feeling.
Definitely! I was excited to see “The 2face” [laughs].
