Nigerian afrobeats superstar, Burna Boy was on Rap Radar Podcast with Elliot Wilson & Brian Miller, to talk about his music.
Burna Boy on the podcast revealed how he recorded ‘Ye’.
According to him he had just rounded up finishing touches to his third studio album ‘Outside‘ and was at popular Lagos nightclub, Quilox unwinding and then Shina Peller the owner of the club, who happens to be his good friend walked up to him with the instrumental in his phone, beckoning on Burna Boy to listen and work on it. He was reluctant at first, but he finally got into the studio with Phantom the producer, located top floor of the club. In about 10 minutes he was done.
In Quote, “It’s so funny. I had finished recording the ‘Outside’ album and I had just bought a Bentley. I was in the club every other day and then, I was in this club called Quilox, right? The owner is my friend, his name is Shina Peller. So, he just comes up to me and he knew I was gone (high) already. I was already f******, alright.
So he pulls up on me and was like, ‘Yo, my guy (Phantom, the producer) just made this beat. I’m telling you, this is yours. I’m like, ‘”Bro, you have started this rubbish…’ He made them put the beat on his phone… First, we go outside to the restaurant and he plays it in my ear – I got hungry.
“Everything was in the club; there’s a restaurant right there, the studio is upstairs… it was a nice setting. So anyways, eventually we go upstairs and I start recording. The producer (Phantom) is there waiting… It didn’t take me 10 minutes. I spent the rest of the time listening to it. That’s how made ‘Ye’ in the club”
Ye peaked at number 26 and 31 on Billboard’s Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop and R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts, respectively. Ye won Song of the Year and Listener’s Choice at the 2019 Soundcity MVP Awards Festival. It also won Song of the Year and was nominated for Best Pop Single and Best Recording of the Year at The Headies 2019.
