Critical Breakdown

Pasuma Wonder is a unique artiste. Not only has he dominated the genre of Fuji music for over 15 years and remained relevant to the Fuji street culture, but he was one of the first artistes outside of the contemporary genres that identified with the urban youth scene when he collaborated with Remedies in 1997 on their hit single Jealousy, and also when he featured on So Ligali by Eedris Abdulkareem on his 2002 debut album P.A.S.S. Since the dawn of the Millenium Pasuma has been an active participant in the urban scene,collaborating with different acts across different genres, more than any other artiste, and towards the end of 2013, rumours began to fly that he was experimenting with the Afro-pop sound and working on a more urban inspired project, a report that eventually became a fact when he announced he was releasing the aforementioned project on his label Wasbar Records under which he signed Warri acts Frankie Free and DJ Toxiq late last year.

Pasuma Wonder – Oruka

After a series of promotional singles and a groundbreaking industry night performance, “Hafrican Puff Darry” released the 16-track album titled My World on the 30th of July. The album opens up with a mission statement of sorts titled Quality a mid tempo beat that had his gruff tone booming over, letting you know the driving force that has kept him relevant and consistent, his quality. It’s a befitting opening to the album that continues to the next song Whyne Am which was produced by Puffy Tee, an infectious dance song which implores the ladies to shake their stuff on the dance floor, somehow Passo managed to pull it off with the one-dimensional lyrical style which most of our contemporary Afro-pop stars use and executed it just well. Next he rolls out a sizzling romantic duet with Tiwa Savage titled Ife over a Spellz produced beat and continues the musical flow on the next track an album filler O Ti Clear,a street-pop song, laced with a gritty instrumental which was made even more surreal by the broken bottle effect which gave the song more “umph” , nevertheless the song is quite forgettable. The dancehall sound is almost a staple for most Afro-pop albums nowadays, and Pasuma obliges us on the next song the heavy Our Lagos ( inspired by Baba Fryos hit track Denge Pose ) which featured Patoranking. The song celebrates the rich history of Lagos affirming their hometown pride, and the sound takes a more Galala/konto edge which I feel encapsulates the original sound of the Eko slums. Oruka the next song is another good love song though it’s a bit lyrically sub-par ( for his level ), he maneuvered the uptempo instrumental just fine, I’m sure its going to be a favourite amongst the ladies. The listening experience continues to the next song Abo, a dance song which was cushioned by a rhythmic handclap pattern and basically had him celebrating himself, It’s a personal favourite. Olamide has always let it be known that his music is inspired by Fuji music, and he has collaborated with Pasuma on his own track Oga Nla off his Street OT album, he returns the favour on the next song Action which gravitated more towards the contemporary Fuji vibe sonically. The collaboration is an organic blend of traditional fuji sound and the new school fuji vibe. Ogede Ti Pon is the next song, and the first single that was released to promote the album, On this one, Pasuma attempted to make hip-hop music and while I applaud his effort, I feel Hip-Hop is one contemporary genre that Pasuma shouldn’t bother meddling with as he only sounded two notches better than Vic-O.

On the next track Shamajo, he teams up with his artiste Frankie Free on a more bouncy dancehall instrumental, It’s a good song, but is more like Frankie Free’s song featuring Passo, though it’s not by any means a standout song, it’s one that will definitely help boost the profile of the Warri bred act. Labe Igi is probably the song on the album core Pasuma fans will appreciate as it tows the more traditional Fuji sound and features Oritse Femi who is probably the most featured artiste in the industry for 2015, together they created a song on the album which will be a staple for jis Fuji fans. He references boxing legend Muhammad Ali on the next song Damiloru, a good dance track which comes right before All Eyes On Me, another forgettable Afro-pop song with sub-par lyrics. The next track Am On Fire featuring Phyno is a weak attempt at appealing to Fans from eastern Nigeria, as the collaboration sounded more obligatory than organic. Another artiste who can pass for a contemporary Fuji act is Q.Dot Alagbe , and he teams up with Passo on the Olohun Ojee, the next track which is a standard collaboration between a veteran and a relatively new act who was inspired by him, the song is another standout song on the album and makes for very good listening. The album closes on a celebratory note with Sope, a song that celebrates the good things of life, though it’s not exactly a great song, it’s a filler that can be appreciated regardless.

First of all, I give Passo credit for his adaptability, and understanding of the contemporary musical genres, and I also applaud him for taking a bold step of dropping a complete pop album,however it must be said that Expecting Pasuma Wonder to drop a classic Afro-pop album is like expecting Wizkid to pull off a great Fuji Album, It just can’t happen. Pasuma is a king in his field but his foray into the world of Afro-pop is not exactly a remarkable one. The album is nice but underwhelming, and I feel core Pasuma fans will not enjoy it, just as core Afro-pop listeners will pay it no mind, so the album is sort of in no mans land. Pasuma has his moments on the album,but generally it has little or no substance.I hope this is a one-off now that Pasuma has tried this sound, he can go back to the Fuji scene and continue what he is best known for, because this album certainly proves that the contemporary and urban music kingdom is definitely not his world.
