Nigerian Celebrities Walk Against Rape – Thursday June, 28th
Disturbed by the incessant cases of rape in Nigeria, top Nigerian celebrities have decided to embark on a campaign against the menace.
Kate Henshaw, Toni Payne, DJ Jimmy Jatt and many other top celebrities are gearing up for the second edition of Celebrities Walk Against Rape (WAR) coming up in June, 2012.
According to the initiator of this laudable idea, Esther Ijewere Kalejaiye, “our aim is to help in encouraging victims to speak out and reduce the stigmatization attached to victims of sexual abuse and rape.
Walk Against Rape is also a platform to inform the society about the soaring scourge of sexual abuse especially as it relates to young girls and women in general,” the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye graduate activist said.
The campaign is endorsed by Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and the state Deputy Governor.
It will be preceded with a sensitization workshop tagged ‘Break The Silence, Speak Up, Walk Against Rape. This would be held at the International School, MAULAG, Akoka on Tuesday, June 19 by 9am.
The street walk is slated for Thursday, June 28. The walk starts by 8am from the Police College, Ikeja (the point of convergence) and ends at the Ministry Of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Secretariat, Alausa – Ikeja (point of departure).
The maiden edition of the campaign was held in April 2010 with over 1000 participants Various celebrities such as Kate Henshaw, Jimmy Jatt, Ali Baba, Owen Gee, Gt the Guiterman, Gbemi Olateru Olabegi (OAP)Isio Wanogho (Model), Bolaji Rosiji, Ego Obaro, Praise Fowowe,Jerrilyn Mulbah, Jodie,Bhaira (AMBO 3), Toni Payne, amongst other top celebrities.
This year’s edition is expected to have Nigerian movie practitioners, sports personalities, media practitioners, musicians, DJs, comedians, youth organisations, showbiz personalities and student delegates from various higher institutions and secondary schools around Lagos State to lend a voice to sexually abused women and children, particularly young girls between the ages of 3-16years.
They will also show their support to the course of bringing an abrupt end to RAPE in Nigeria where the number of rape cases is on the increase.
